Know the container that a lot of people take for quenching thirst? If some care is not taken, it can become a full plate for the microbes
The alert sounded with an investigation of the American Treadmillreviews.net Institute, specializing in data on exercise mats, which examined the presence of bacteria in bottles used by 12 practitioners of physical activity for a week without washing.
The result was scary: in some cases were found more germs than in bowls to feed dogs! The first place in the ranking of the contamination was the bottle known as top, slide the lid needs to be slid to which the user has access to the liquid. Soon after the squeeze type (which direct water squirt in your mouth), followed by models with screw cap.
In the evaluation, the containers that have a built-in internal straw were the ones who showed the smallest number of bacteria. According to the authors of the survey, this is because the drops are accumulated at the base of the scroll, rather than focusing on the exposed surface, attractive place for germs settle.
The experiment’s findings aren’t reason to throw the container in the trash. “Most of these microorganisms comes from our mouth and usually does not cause disease,” explains the clinical and infectious disease Paulo Olzon, the Federal University of São Paulo. The findings reinforce the importance of clean (or change) the thinking in some contexts.
“Although the presence of these agents don’t offer the risks alone, factors such as mouth sores or impaired immunity facilitate your arrival into the bloodstream, which can trigger discomfort, diarrhea …” says the Raquel Muarrek, infectious disease Hospital São Luiz Morumbi, in São Paulo.
Accessory wash with detergent and water regularly is enough to stop threats like that. “A lot of people neglect this habit by the fact the bottle be of particular use”, says Roberto Figueiredo biomedical, known as Dr. Bacteria. Don’t fall for it and observe some care (see the instructions below). So your bottle there’s becoming a nest of germs.
A quick start guide to buy and save the bottle
1. Best choice
Prefer the ones with straw and internal format easier to be sanitized. Opt for stainless steel is a good as it hampers the installation of bacteria.
2. When changing
Although there is no deadline for this, it is wise to replace the bottle if there are slots and color fading, signs that it is already too old.
Wash every time it is used, giving attention to hard to reach places, such as the screw-in lid and edges of the scroll. A bottle brush helps.
Protect the mouth, avoid falls or hits and do not leave the bottle for a long time in places like the car drowned out, something which favours the microbes.
EXAME.com note (March 15, 2017)
The original text of this report contained the recommendation to avoid bottles with Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical substance found in polycarbonate (identified in packaging with the recycling code 7). There are questions about the safety of that substance for use in food and beverage containers. So, your use is prohibited in bottles in Brazil and in other countries.
Contact EXAME.com, the Plastivida, an organization that defends the interests of the plastics industry, objected to this recommendation. In fact, respected studies indicate that, in the amount that can be drawn from a water bottle, BPA is safe. The European food safety authority, for example, States that “the BPA doesn’t bring risks to the health of consumers of any age (including fetuses, children and adolescents).
Taking into account these studies, we decided to remove from the list above, the recommendation not to use polycarbonate bottles.
